I’m sure I’m not the only one who is looking forward to a sunny weekend ahead. With temperatures forecasted to nudge close to the 60-degree mark, a day on the river is sounding nice.  Let’s dive into this week’s fishing report.

south fork weather

The governor of Idaho has extended the stay at home order through the end of the month. If you chose to recreate on the river, please remember to practice social distancing at boat ramps, parking lots, gas stations, etc. and respect the small community here in Swan Valley.

The flow out of Palisades bumped up to 12,200 cfs on Monday and has remained steady.  This should be really good timing for the weekend as the fish will have really settled into their new spots.  If you fish a lot in the summer these flows might look familiar and your “honey holes” might be producing.  The water is gin clear and beautiful.

Nymphs and Streamers will remain the name of the game from now until mid-June when we start to see our summer bugs.  Stonefly nymphs of various sizes and colors are always a go-to as are a variety of worms, eggs, midges, and BWO patterns.  Two fly nymph rigs with a stonefly trailed by your favorite bead head, egg or worm will be your best search and destroy set up.  The water is still really cold so don’t expect red hot fishing unless you find some fish eating eggs behind spawning rainbows.  The same applies to streamers, cold water means you’ll need to fish deep and slow, focusing on slower moving and even water that isn’t moving might produce the most chases.

Palisades reservoir is still iced over but fishing on the Main Snake below American Falls remains an option and is fishing well.

Have a great weekend and stay healthy!
