South Fork of the Snake River Fishing Report 5/16/2019

fly fishing for bass on snake river

This week’s fishing report includes reports from both the South Fork and the Main Snake River below American Falls Reservoir. Several of our guides and guests were exploring these waters this week with our friends at Snake River Fly in Pocatello.

First things first for the South Fork. The biggest change from last week’s report will be the weather. A strong low-pressure system is moving in as I type this and it looks to be a wet and windy weekend for South East Idaho. Fishing has been excellent this week especially on the lower river, sections 3 and 4. The water is a bit warmer on the lower river and bugs and fish seem to be more active. Our guides and guests have been getting them on various stonefly nymphs with a mayfly nymph dropper fished deep under an indicator. With the big change in the weather coming I’d pack your best rain jacket and a box full of streamers but keep the nymphs around just in case. Both could serve you well and if the wind doesn’t blow too hard it would be very possible to see a few Blue Winged Olive mayflies out and about.

Speaking of streamer fishing leads us right into the Snake River below American Falls. If you’re looking to improve your streamer game right now it THE time for smallmouth bass fishing on the Snake. Several of our guides, guests, and even our manager Justin got in on the action this week and if you’re not catching bass you might just hook into a trophy rainbow! Check out these photos.
